The Mayor of Sandwich formally receives the Freemasons’ bench

Freemasons from Sandwich gathered on the quay on the morning of August 25th, the first day of the Sandwich Festival. They were there to formally hand over a bench to Sandwich Town Council to celebrate the tercentenary of the formation of the first Freemasons’ Grand Lodge. The bench was received by the Town Mayor and Speaker of the Cinque Ports, Councillor Paul Graeme, in full mayoral regalia.

The bench has a plaque fitted commemorating the event and Jake Jackson, speaking on behalf of the Sandwich Freemasons, said: “all the Freemasons of Sandwich had contributed to the project and were proud to present the bench for the use, relaxation and pleasure of the residents of Sandwich and its visitors.”
